Historical Significance of ABI Peak Climbing

In 1855, the Schlagintweit brothers started climbing near Mt ABI Peak by accidentally going up Abi Gamin instead of Kamet, setting a record for height at that time. Their climb and later ones between 1907 and 1913 by climbers like Longstaff, Meade, and Slingsby helped explore and understand the Mt. ABI Peak area. These early climbs, reaching up to about 23,000 feet, prepared the way for future climbing in this tough area.

Abi Gamin, near Mt. ABI Peak, saw its first successful climb in 1950 by an Anglo-Swiss team on the northeast ridge, a route first taken by the Schlagintweit brothers. In the 1950s, Indian teams also successfully climbed the peak using the southwest ridge. A notable event in Mt ABI Peak climbing happened in 1988 when 17-year-old Govind Joshi climbed Abi Gamin without extra oxygen, becoming the youngest to do so. His team’s climb was unique for sticking to vegetarian food and not having a doctor with them.

    We strongly advise you to purchase a SIM card for reliable internet access throughout Nepal. Nepal Telecom (owned by the government) and NCELL (owned by the private sector) are the two main SIM card providers in Nepal.
