Oman follows Oman Standard Time (OST), four hours ahead of GMT. Adjust your watch accordingly to get a head start on your day!
Stay powered up in Oman! The standard voltage is 220-240 volts, 50Hz; the most commonly used plugs are the square three-pin type. If your devices require a different connection, remember to bring an adapter.
Communicate with ease! While Arabic is the official language, English is widely spoken and understood, ensuring smooth communication during your stay.
Manage your finances wisely! In Oman, the official currency is the Omani Rial (OMR). You’ll find banknotes in various denominations, including OMR One, Five, Ten, Twenty, and Fifty, as well as 500, 250, 200, and 100 baiza. Additionally, there are coins in circulation with values of 50, 25, 10, and 5 baiza. You can easily access cash through ATMs; major credit cards are generally accepted.
Keep an eye on your budget! 1 Omani Rial is equivalent to 1,000 baiza. Remember this exchange rate when planning your expenditures.
Pack smart for comfort and cultural sensitivity. Lightweight cotton clothing is ideal year-round, and it’s a good idea to have a warm wrap for cooler evenings, mountain trips, or air-conditioned spaces. Outside of hotels, avoid revealing clothing and opt for modest attire, such as long skirts/dresses, covered shoulders for women and trousers, and sleeved shirts for men. Tight-fitting clothes are best reserved for hotel restaurants, as shorts are generally not seen in public, and beachwear is reserved for the beach.
Stay connected with ease! Oman’s country code is 968. Although roaming agreements exist with international mobile phone companies, coverage can vary. You’ll also find internet cafes readily available throughout the country.
Choose the perfect time for your Oman Adventure! Oman’s prime season runs from November to mid-March, offering pleasant temperatures around 25°C and refreshing mountain air. From May to August, the country experiences hot and hazy weather, except for the “Khareef” season in southern Oman from mid-June to late August, which provides a delightful escape from the heat. The peak tourist season in the north is from November to mid-March.
Satisfy your taste buds! Expect to spend approximately US$5 for a simple snack, US$10-18 for a light meal, and US$25-40 for a fine dining experience.
Stay hydrated wisely! Budget around US$2 for a liter of water and US$2 for a 30cl bottle of soft drink. Beer enthusiasts can expect to pay about US$7 per bottle. Alcohol is only allowed in designated areas like hotels, bars, and restaurants. Smoking is prohibited in public spaces, and individuals under 20 years old are restricted from purchasing cigarettes and entering designated smoking areas. During Ramadan, it’s essential to be aware that eating, drinking, and smoking in public are not permitted as a sign of respect for this holy month in Oman.
Prioritize your well-being! While no vaccinations are mandatory for entering Oman, a cholera and yellow fever certificate is required if you arrive from affected areas. It’s advisable to avoid tap water outside the capital area and stick to bottled water throughout your trip. Food purchased from significant supermarkets is generally safe. Avoid dairy products outside the capital and consider boiled or pasteurized options. When it comes to meat and fish, cook them thoroughly and peel fruits and vegetables before consuming.
Embrace Omani culture with respect! Oman is a Muslim country, so be mindful of alcohol consumption, which is restricted to hotels and designated areas. During Ramadan, show respectful behavior by refraining from public displays of smoking, drinking, or eating between sunrise and sunset. The customary greeting is a handshake, and small gifts that promote your company or country are greatly appreciated. Dress modestly, especially outside hotels, and avoid tight-fitting clothing unless in hotel areas. Remember that shorts are unsuitable for public spaces, and beachwear is only appropriate at the beach. Lastly, refrain from collecting seashells or abalone.

I recently did an 8-day Oman Adventure, and it proved to be an unforgettable experience. The itinerary was meticulously planned, allowing us to discover both the historical and natural marvels of Oman. From the magnificent Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque to the enchanting desert camp beneath the starry skies, each day unveiled new and exciting adventures. The local guides were exceptionally knowledgeable and extended a warm welcome. The only reason I didn’t award it five stars is that on some days, it felt a tad rushed, and I yearned for more time to explore certain destinations fully. Nevertheless, it was an exceptional journey through this captivating country.
