Trek difficulty

Everest Base Camp presents an exciting challenge for beginners, perfect for experienced and novice adventurers! The highest point you will reach is 5,550m at Kala Patthar, while the lowest elevation you will experience is a still-challenging 2850 m at Monjo. You can expect to spend up to 8 hours traveling on the route each day, but the trek is designed to be achievable in around 6 hours of walking. Make sure you’re prepared for the physical demands of high altitude – but don’t worry, no technical skills are needed.

Best Season

As the days get longer in springtime (March to May), the EBC is a great destination to explore. With temperatures ranging from a pleasant 15°C up in the highlands to a crisp -10°C, there’s no wrong time to trek around this stunning area. An explosion of color greets you as you take in the blanket of vibrant rhododendrons atop the majestic Himalayas, with the birds adding a beautiful melody to the landscape.

Autumn (September to early December) is also the perfect season to experience EBC – the days are crisp and cool, with temperatures ranging from 15 to 18°C, while the evenings become chillier (0 to 5°C), adding to the stunning scenery of golden/amber foliage against a backdrop of deepening cobalt skies.

Winter (late December to February) and monsoon (June to August) seasons can be just as enjoyable as any other time in the beautiful Himalayas. During winter, the snow can be pretty heavy at greater heights, such as Kala Patthar and Gorak Shep, but the sight of these majestic mountains blanketed in white is breathtaking. The sunsets take on a magical hue, filling the atmosphere with tranquility.

During monsoons (July to August), the rain pattering against the earth creates a tranquil and peaceful atmosphere. Everywhere you look, the landscape is alive with lush greenery, vibrant flowers, and a sweet, earthy aroma of rain. The rivers gush with energy, the thunder rumbles in the sky, and the wind carries the soothing sound of the monsoon.

At Peregrine Treks, we believe that dreaming of your perfect vacation is half the fun! We make the planning process easy so you can focus on the excitement of your upcoming getaway. No matter what season it is, our extensive selection of packages has something for everyone.

Altitude sickness

We have amended the Everest Base Camp Trek, making it suitable for beginner and older trekkers, and named this Everest Base Camp for beginners. Knowing the potential for altitude sickness is essential as your journey progresses and you ascend higher. It is vital to be well-prepared for the trek and to take all necessary precautions to keep yourself safe and healthy throughout your journey.

Our experienced guides come equipped with Diamox medicine, which is known to help prevent altitude sickness. If you feel any dizziness, nausea, or headache symptoms, alert your guide immediately. You should drink at least 3 liters of water daily to stay hydrated, and take it slow as you ascend – don’t forget to use the acclimatization day! The key is to listen to your body, and if you start to feel any symptoms of altitude sickness, don’t push yourself – inform your guide so that they can provide you with the necessary medicine and help you safely reach your destination.

One typical day in trekking

A typical day on the EBC trek begins before dawn, with a steaming cup of tea to prepare the body and mind for the adventure ahead. After a hearty breakfast, you pack up and prepare for the day’s walk, with the larger bags being carried by porters or pack animals such as Yaks. As your daypack is filled with the essentials, you will follow your guide on a winding and gradual trail littered with local farm villages, each with its unique culture and customs.

In the afternoon, you will have a chance to pause and take in the beauty of the landscape, indulging in an hour-long reprieve over lunch where you can genuinely appreciate the stunningly picturesque scenery.

The path will then take you through a cool alpine forest with trees like rhododendrons, magnolias, hemlocks, oaks, pines, and firs. As per your program, you can expect to spend around 5-6 hours on the trail each day, and along the way, you will experience an unrivaled level of natural beauty that will leave you in awe.

Every evening you will be nestled in the local lodge, where the glowing fire in the hearth will warmly welcome you. The friendly staff will provide a comfortable and cozy experience as you sit and relax in the inviting atmosphere. The menu offers various delightful dishes to tantalize your taste buds and soothe your soul.

Frequently Asked Questions

The Everest Journey is an iconic experience, but although it is not technically challenging, it is still a demanding and adventurous trek. You will likely experience extreme weather conditions, including high winds, storms, and snow. This is why it is essential to add Everest Base Camp Trek Insurance to your priority list before starting on a trek in the Himalayas. Not only does the insurance cover medical emergencies, but it will also provide financial protection in case of flight delays or cancellations.

Beginning the ascent from Base Camp, although Mount Everest is not visible due to other mountains in the region, you will be able to experience breathtaking sights of the world’s tallest mountain at different climb stages. Consequently, you will be able to take numerous photographs of Mount Everest.

Absolutely! Everest Link offers an extensive Wi-Fi network throughout the Everest Base Camp Trek, providing reliable access to over 200 hot spots in over 40 villages. These hot spots benefit the 34,000 locals and the 40,000 visitors who trek in the region annually.

The Sherpa people of the Mount Everest region have been strongly impacted by Tibetan Buddhism, with a monastery and lama in every village. The culture and customs of the Sherpa people are primarily reminiscent of those of Tibet, as the language is comparable, and the term ‘Sherpa’ is derived from the Tibetan word for ‘East.’ This suggests that the Sherpa people migrated from East Tibet to the Khumbu area of Mount Everest.

The Everest region has historically been a secure and safe destination for travelers, with minimal theft and burglary cases. Nonetheless, it is essential for visitors to use caution when handling valuables and money and to ensure they are stored securely.

Also, taking a rest day to acclimatize to higher altitudes is recommended before continuing with the itinerary. This is important to mitigate any potential altitude-related hazards.

We have a close affiliation with helicopter companies if one is very ill. Our guide will immediately contact the headquarters to arrange an emergency evacuation to Kathmandu, ensuring the individual receives quality medical care until they fully recover.

Along the Everest Base Camp trek, it is common to come across the ‘squat toilet,’ which is generally well maintained, although the water can be cold. Many lodges and tea houses will also provide western-style toilets, with hot showers powered by solar panels or micro-hydropower. There may be a small charge for these services.

Most places you visit will have outlets you can use to charge your mobile and camera batteries, but you may need to pay a small fee. We recommend bringing a portable power bank or a solar charger to avoid this expense to ensure your devices are always charged.

I am 68 and I did the Everest Base Camp trek in 2023, and our guide was absolutely amazing. He knew the area like the back of his hand, from the mountain names and heights to the history of the region. Plus, he was so well-connected in the trekking community – from the lodges to the porters. He was always looking out for us, making sure we were hydrated, fed, and comfortable.
