Over the ten days of your Oman luxury holiday, you will dive into Oman’s wild side, moving from sea to mountains to desert. First, you snorkel in clear blue water as colorful fish circle bright coral. Then you canyoneer through cool wadis and trek along high trails that reveal expansive views of terraces and deep valleys. Finally, you race over rolling desert dunes in a 4×4, feeling Oman’s raw power and beauty in every moment.
Along with adventure, this tour immerses you in Oman’s vibrant culture as you wander through Muscat’s Mutrah Souq, inhaling the scent of incense. At the same time, silver, crafts, and bright textiles crowd the stalls, then step into the calm beauty of the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, where elegant courtyards and design highlight local craftsmanship, before continuing to Nizwa, where you climb through the old fort and weave through the lively market of dates, spices, sweets, and traditional daggers, all together helping you feel Oman’s long history and traditions in the present moment.
You also meet the people who call these landscapes home. In the desert, you may sit in a Bedouin tent, drink hot tea, and talk with families who have lived among the dunes for generations. These moments are often simple but very special. They allow you to understand life in Oman through the stories and kindness of the people who live there.
Your travel is comfortable and smooth throughout the tour. You ride in a private 4×4 vehicle that is perfect for mountain roads, desert tracks, and coastal highways. Your driver navigates the changing terrain with skill, allowing you to sit back and take in the scenery. Whether you are driving along the sea, passing through palm-filled villages, or climbing toward cool mountain air, the journey feels relaxed and enjoyable.
Your stays become a seamless part of the journey, as you begin in Muscat at a five-star resort where elegant design, beach views, a fabulous pool, and a relaxing spa welcome you after each day of exploring, then move into tranquil mountain retreats wrapped in terraces and cliffs, where fresh air, cozy rooms, and fine dining help you slow down, and finally drift into a glamorous desert camp with soft tents, warm lights, and profound silence, where waking to a golden sunrise or watching stars spill across the sky ties the whole experience together in a single, unforgettable memory.
The food throughout the tour keeps the experience enjoyable and rich. You taste fresh seafood, flavorful rice dishes, grilled meats, warm breads, and refreshing salads. In the desert, you can enjoy a barbecue dinner cooked by local chefs. Many travelers love trying shuwa, a traditional dish where lamb cooks slowly underground until it becomes incredibly tender. If you prefer something familiar, international dishes are always available. Each meal reflects the care and pride that Omanis put into their food.
Your guides bring your whole Oman Grand Explorer journey together. They know the land, the history, and the safest paths through mountains, canyons, and wadis. They walk beside you during treks, assist during canyoning, and watch over your comfort and safety during every activity. They share stories about local life, answer your questions, and help you connect with the culture in a genuine and enjoyable way. Their presence helps every experience feel smooth, well-planned, and meaningful.
The Oman Grand Explorer tour is more than a list of places and activities. It is a carefully designed journey that balances adventure, culture, luxury, and relaxation. Accommodation: The Chedi Muscat (or a similar luxury hotel)
Meal: Not included
After having a hearty breakfast, meet with your private guide in the hotel’s lobby and start the first day of the tour by exploring Muscat city. The first destination of today’s trip is the Sultan Qaboos Grand Mosque, a masterpiece of modern Islamic architecture and a place for worship and prayers. The towering domes, glittering chandeliers, and vast hand-woven carpets offer insights into the mosque’s impressive features and Omani religious culture. However, please ensure you wear modest attire, and ladies, do not forget to include a scarf. Thank you.

After the mosque, you will be heading towards the Amouage Perfumery, a place where you will get an exclusive view of the production of the world’s most expensive perfumes. The rich scents of frankincense, rose, and exotic spices, combined with the art of traditional perfume making, make this visit truly delightful.
From the Amouage perfumery, you will drive through the upscale Qurum district to explore the Royal Opera House Muscat. This opera house is a testament to the sultanate’s appreciation for arts and culture, with its elegant blend of marble artistry and wooden panels. You will then have your lunch in the historic Mutrah area by midday. You can enjoy freshly caught and prepared seafood or some local dishes at a seaside restaurant, with the harbor where dhows, traditional wooden boats bobbing in the water, as your view.
After having lunch, you will explore the National Museum of Oman. This state-of-the-art institution showcases the remarkable history of Oman from its prehistoric times to the present day. Walk along the scenic Mutrah Corniche with your guide. You will see the ceremonial Al Alam Palace and the twin 16th-century Portuguese forts Al Jalali and Al Mirani overlooking the harbor, along the walk.
In the late afternoon, a traditional dhow boat will be awaiting you for a relaxing 2-hour ride on the sea. Enjoy the magical experience of seeing the panoramic view of Muscat’s coastline and sunset from the sea. Once ashore, your first day of the trip will end with a visit to the lively Mutrah Souq, one of the oldest and traditional markets in Oman. The market is vibrant and a perfect place to pick souvenirs for your loved ones, filled with the fragrance of frankincense, spices, silver jewelry, and carpets piled high.

Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
Get an early bite to energize your day, and then start your day’s trip at around 7:30 AM to the marina for a marine adventure. Climb aboard a private speedboat and head to the pristine Daymaniyat Island, a protected marine reserve off the coast of Muscat. You will spend your morning snorkeling in two different sites that are known far and wide for their crystal-clear turquoise waters and vibrant coral reefs.

You don’t have to worry about the gears, as your guide will provide you with a complete set of snorkeling gear along with instructions, and after properly wearing the gear, dive into the water. You will see many sea turtles, colorful reef fish, and perhaps even some spotted eagle rays. Take a break between your snorkel session by boarding the boat and taking in the views of white-sand beaches and rocky islets under the warm sun. Have a light lunch on the ship and rest for a while. By early afternoon, you will return to your hotel.
Take the late afternoon to rest and refresh. Lounge by the pool or enjoy a spa treatment after a busy morning. As the day cools, get ready for an evening you won’t forget. Your guide will drive you to Azaiba Beach, a quiet stretch of sand. Meet gentle Arabian horses and take a private sunset horseback ride along the shore.
Even if you are a beginner or an experienced rider, enjoy the relaxed 30-minute ride, with an expert handler by your side if you need help, as the sky turns gold and pink. After the ride, kick off your boots and settle into a spot on the beach where cocktails await. Sip your drink, soak up the peaceful vibe, and watch the sun set into the Arabian Gulf. It’s the perfect way to end a day full of adventure.
Head back to your hotel in the evening. You can choose to dine at one of Muscat’s fine restaurants or enjoy a meal at your hotel, whichever you prefer.
Accommodation: The Chedi Muscat (or a similar luxury hotel)
Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
After checking out of your hotel in Muscat, you will drive southeast along the coast this morning. Your first stop is the Bimmah Sinkhole, a dramatic limestone crater filled with bright green water. Local legend says a meteor created this natural pool. Take your time to enjoy the view, snap some photos, and dip your feet in the cool water.

After exploring this natural wonder, continue your drive to the entrance of Wadi Tiwi, a gorgeous canyon lined with lush date palms and dotted with clear, aquamarine pools. Spend a few moments taking in the scenery and the peaceful atmosphere before moving on to your next adventure. Get ready for a guided canyoning adventure upon arrival at Wadi Tiwi.
Your guide will provide you with helmets and life jackets as you hike into the wadi, following terraced gardens and flowing falaj irrigation channels toward the village of Mibam. The trail soon leads into rocky pools and gentle cascades, creating a natural playground. Spend the late morning climbing over boulders, wading through streams, and swimming in clear pools hidden between the canyon walls.
Guests who enjoy a thrill can jump from rocks into the deep, turquoise water under the supervision of a guide. The green vegetation along the trail offers welcome shade and a refreshing contrast to Oman’s desert landscapes. By early afternoon, after an active morning in the wadi, you will be ready for a hearty lunch and a short break before continuing your journey.
Stop for a hearty lunch at a local restaurant in a nearby town and enjoy the traditional Omani flavors. After Lunch, take a short drive to Wadi Dayqah Dam, an impressive reservoir surrounded by rugged mountains.
The area around the dam is reserved exclusively for our guests as a private camping site. Spend an hour on the calm waters, kayaking or paddling, and take in the peaceful scenery with rocky peaks rising all around you. As evening approaches, settle into our fully equipped lakeside camp. Your tent offers plenty of space and comfort, and the campsite provides essentials like toilets and showers while keeping you close to nature. Relax and enjoy the serene atmosphere as the sun sets over the lake.
As night falls, enjoy a freshly grilled barbecue prepared by the camp crew. Eat under the stars while the canyon walls surround the campsite. You can chat with other travelers around the fire or sit quietly and listen to the sounds of the night. On clear evenings, the Milky Way is visible in the sky. After dinner, go to your tent and get a good night’s sleep, with all the comforts of the campsite while staying close to nature.
Accommodation: Private Wadi Dayqah Camp
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Wake up to the sunrise over the calm waters of Wadi Dayqah Dam and enjoy breakfast at the camp. After breakfast, take some time to enjoy the morning at your leisure. You can go out on the lake in a kayak or paddle boat, try mountain biking on the nearby trails, or relax and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. Once you have finished your activities, pack your belongings and continue your journey to the next destination.

Climb into the 4×4 and begin a scenic drive along the coast as you head south toward the Wahiba Sands. Along the way, you will see beautiful contrasts of nature: on one side, the deep blue and shimmering Arabian Sea, and on the other, rugged mountains and desert plains. For a break or to get a glimpse of local life, stop in a small fishing village or at roadside cafes. Then, enjoy a simple lunch at a local restaurant, where you can try freshly grilled fish caught that morning.
By afternoon, you will arrive at the edge of the Wahiba Sands, also known as Sharqiya Sands, Oman’s vast sea of dunes that stretches about 200 kilometers. As you leave the flat gravel plains behind, the towering dunes rise ahead, reaching heights of 100 meters and glowing in shades of orange and gold.
Once your driver deflates the vehicle’s tires to prepare for desert driving, the adventure begins with an exciting dune-bashing ride deep into the sand. Hold on tightly as your driver navigates steep dunes and their slopes, offering both thrills and incredible views. Along the way, make sure to watch out for roaming camels and the occasional Bedouin settlement, where nomadic families have lived in Wahiba for centuries.
After arriving and settling in at your private desert camp among the remote dunes just before sunset, climb a nearby dune to watch the sun sink below the horizon and color the sky in red and purple. In here, you experience warm Bedouin hospitality with traditional Omani coffee and dates as you get comfortable in your tent. The camp tents are spacious and furnished with comfy beds, carpets, and cushions, providing comfort with a touch of desert charm.
If you’d like, you can try some optional desert activities, such as a short camel ride, sandboarding down the dunes, or riding a quad bike across the sand. When night falls, enjoy a barbecue dinner under the stars, with grilled meats, salads, and local specialties served by the campfire. With no city lights around, you can watch the stars, spot constellations, or enjoy the calm and quiet of the desert night.
End the day by sleeping in your cozy tent, listening to the gentle sounds of the desert wind.
Accommodation: Luxury Desert Camp in Wahiba Sands
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Wake up in the quiet pre-dawn desert to experience the sunrise over the dunes. If you are an early riser, you can climb a nearby dune while the stars fade and watch as the first light spreads across the sands, gradually changing them from soft purple to bright gold. For an extra special start to the day, you can take an optional hot air balloon ride at dawn, which offers a bird’s-eye view of the endless dunes as the sun rises.
However, it will incur an additional cost. After returning to the camp, enjoy your breakfast in the crisp morning air. Take a moment to breathe in the cool desert breeze and soak in the views one last time before leaving Wahiba Sands. Then, set off in your 4×4, following the sand tracks back to the paved roads as your journey continues.
Today’s first adventure takes you to Wadi Hawer, a hidden canyon in the Omani wilderness. After a scenic drive into the foothills, arrive at the wadi’s entrance and get ready for some light canyoning. You will hike along a clear stream, with tall cliffs and palm groves on either side, and have chances to wade through pools or climb over rocks along the way. Your guide will adjust the route to suit the group’s comfort, allowing you to choose between swimming in a deep pool or relaxing by a small waterfall. By late morning, you will leave the wadi feeling refreshed and ready for the next part of your day.
For lunch, you will drive to a nearby town and enjoy traditional Omani dishes at a local restaurant, such as spiced rice with grilled meat or a flavorful curry served with fresh bread. After lunch, continue your journey toward the historic oasis city of Nizwa, set among date palm groves and the mountains of Oman’s interior.
Nizwa served as the country’s capital in the 17th century and remains an important center of culture and religion. Arriving by late afternoon, take a guided walk along the ancient Al Aqur city wall as the sun begins to set. The fortification offers a panoramic view over Nizwa’s clay-colored buildings and lush green palm oasis, which appear especially striking in the golden light. Your guide will share the city’s history and point out key landmarks, including the dome of Nizwa Fort, which you will fully explore the following day.
After enjoying the sunset, drive to your hotel in Nizwa and check in. The rest of the evening is at your leisure, so you can spend it as you wish. You can take time to relax after the day’s travel, or you can stroll through the hotel’s gardens or take a swim in the pool under the stars. If you prefer to dine out, Nizwa has several local restaurants where you can try Arabic grilled specialties or international dishes. Alternatively, you can enjoy a meal at the hotel’s own restaurant.
Accommodation: Nizwa Heritage Inn or Golden Tulip Nizwa (or similar upscale hotel in Nizwa)
Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
After breakfast, explore the historic Nizwa Fort, one of Oman’s most iconic cultural landmarks. This historic fort, built in the 17th century, features a large round tower overlooking the town. Explore the maze of rooms, corridors, and courtyards along with the spiral staircase that brings you to the top of the tower for a magnificent view of Nizwa’s skyline, filled with golden mosques and palm oasis with craggy mountains, along with your guide recounting the tales of how the fort defended Nizwa against raiders.
After visiting the fort, you can explore the nearby Nizwa Souq. Here, locals sell silver jewelry, hand-carved khanjars (daggers), pottery, livestock, and fragrant spices. If your visit falls on a Friday morning, you may see the lively goat market in action. The souq is a perfect place to pick up authentic handicrafts and observe everyday life in Oman’s historic capital.
You will leave Nizwa town mid-morning and drive toward Bahla. Along the way, stop at the impressive Jabreen Castle, also known as Jabreen Castle. Built in the 1600s as a residential palace rather than a defensive fort, the castle is renowned for its beautifully painted wood-beamed ceilings, which feature floral and astrological motifs.
Explore the date storage rooms, meeting halls, and rooftop battlements, filled with the elegance of architectural ingenuity, including wind towers and secret staircases. Your guide will highlight the castle’s most fascinating features, including the “Sun and Moon” chamber, which features intricate calligraphy and plaster carvings.
Enjoy your lunch at a local traditional restaurant, in a shaded garden with a picnic-style lunch, or at a casual eatery in Bahla, where you can try traditional dishes such as tender shuwa, a spiced lamb slowly cooked underground, or flavorful Omani biryani. After finishing lunch, continue to Bahla Fort, a UNESCO World Heritage site and one of Oman’s oldest forts.
Although there is not enough time to explore inside, you can still admire the fort’s massive structure from the outside and take photos. From this vantage point, notice how the fort stretches along the ridges, offering a strong sense of Oman’s history, before you continue your journey into the mountains.
Now it’s time to begin the ascent into the Al Hajar Mountains, following a winding road that takes you up toward Jebel Shams, the “Mountain of the Sun,” which at over 3,000 meters is Oman’s highest peak. As your 4×4 climbs higher, the air grows cooler, and the views become even more spectacular. Along the way, you will pass the terraced farms of Al Hamra and navigate steep hairpin bends as you approach the summit plateau.
By late afternoon, you will arrive at your highland camp near the rim of the canyon. Once there, take a moment to admire the breathtaking view into Wadi Ghul, often called the “Grand Canyon of Arabia,” with its sheer drop of over a thousand meters.
Adjust to the camp, located at around 2,000 meters, where the evening air is refreshingly cool. While the crew prepares your tents and facilities, take some free time to relax. You might enjoy a hot cup of Omani tea while gazing at the vast canyon or take a short walk to a nearby viewpoint. As dusk approaches, your guides will provide a safety briefing for tomorrow’s via ferrata adventure, explaining the gear and what to expect during the climb.
Once nightfall, savor the delicious barbecue dinner, prepared around the campfire again. After a tiring day’s travel, you can enjoy grilled meats and vegetables, warm, nourishing soup, and many other comforts, leaving you fulfilled and with a feeling of satisfaction you’ve never experienced before. Sharing stories under the starry sky makes this moment even more memorable and enjoyable.
You might even be able to catch sight of a shooting star. After dinner, take a well-deserved rest in your tent with the warm blankets we have provided, as nights at this altitude can be pretty cold. Fall asleep in the midst of the tranquil mountain environment, eagerly awaiting tomorrow’s trek and climb.
Accommodation: Jebel Shams Camp
Meal: Breakfast, Lunch, and Dinner
Waking up to the cool mountain air, with a hearty breakfast as the sun rises and illuminates the peaks of Jebel Shams, is genuinely a great way to start the day’s adventure. Today’s adventure combines hiking and climbing, offering one of the tour’s highlights. After putting on sturdy shoes and preparing your daypack, set off on the famous Balcony Walk trail.
This relatively easy hike follows a ledge along the rim of Oman’s Grand Canyon, providing constant panoramic views into the dramatic depths of Wadi Ghul below. Along the way, your guide will lead you along the rocky path and point out the layers of geological history visible on the sheer canyon walls. Be sure to have your camera ready, as the terraced valley and the play of morning light in the chasm make for incredible photo opportunities. The hike covers about 3 km, taking roughly 1.5 to 2 hours each way on mostly flat terrain, and ends at the abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis.
After about an hour and a half of walking, you will arrive at the ancient abandoned village of Sab Bani Khamis, hidden in a cliffside alcove. This antique village, reachable only on foot, offers a glimpse into how past communities lived isolated among these mountains, with stone houses and remnants of terraced fields still visible clinging to the rock.
This village is the real starting point of the adventure, where you gear up with a climbing harness and helmet for the Via Ferrata, a protected climbing route that allows for easy and safe ascent. Following a detailed safety briefing, clip into the fixed steel cable and begin the ascent under your instructors’ guidance. The Via Ferrata climb is about 180 meters (600 feet) up the canyon wall, taking you over ladders, metal rungs, and rocky ledges.
While some sections demand focus on each step, you can also pause to take in the incredible bird’s-eye views as the canyon spreads out beneath you. The climb is thrilling but secure, as you remain clipped in at all times and the guides are always nearby to assist. After navigating three vertical sections and traversing dramatic rock faces, you will reach the top of the plateau.
Celebrate your achievement and take a well-earned rest. By midday, enjoy a packed picnic lunch or a meal at a nearby mountain lodge to refuel, sharing stories of the morning’s excitement while dining with a view of the canyon.
After refueling yourself, it is now time to head back to Muscat. The descent from Jebel Shams will be on a 4×4 vehicle. You can sit back, relax, and watch the landscape transition from the high mountainous terrain to the plains in the 3-hour drive.
You will have arrived back in the capital city and checked into your luxury hotel by late afternoon or early evening. Being back in the comfort of a plush bed and a hot shower will make you feel very grateful and welcome after spending a rugged mountain adventure.
You don’t have any schedule in the evening, so you can relax at the resort by taking a dip in the pool or unwind on the beach. If you are up for it, you can do a celebration of some sort with a gourmet dinner in one of Muscat’s fine restaurants or at your hotel’s elegant dining room.
Accommodation: Al Bustan Palace, Muscat (or Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah / similar 5-star beach resort in Muscat)
Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
After a relaxed breakfast at the hotel, meet with your guide for the final day of your Oman Grand Explorer tour package, by the sea. Today, you will be exploring the marine life of Muscat. Hence, head to the marina and board the boat for a dolphin watching cruise. Many dolphins, like spinner dolphins and bottlenose dolphins, frequent the waters of Muscat all year round.
With a bit of luck, you will see and observe these amazing creatures in their natural habitat, racing and leaping above the waves. Be sure to keep your cameras steady and ready, as large pods sometimes gather together and their acrobatics are truly photo-worthy. If you want to know more about the marine life, the boat crew will share insights on it, and you can ask them anything you don’t understand. Other than that, relax and enjoy the sea breeze on this roughly 2-hour cruise.
After the dolphins, the scenic bays of Bandar Khairan will be waiting for you. Bandar Khairan is a coastal enclave popular for its turquoise waters, mangrove-lined inlets, and small islands. You will then drop anchor at a secluded white sand beach that is accessible only by boat. This is your chance to enjoy the midday hours, swimming in the calm, clear sea or snorkeling just off the shore, with snorkel gear available on board.
The underwater world is lively, and you might spot parrotfish, angelfish, and bright coral formations in the shallow reefs. If you want to explore a little more, kayaks are ready for you to paddle around the quiet coves, where you can get a closer look at the rugged shoreline and maybe even catch sight of coastal birds or a turtle gliding through the water.
While you work up an appetite with these activities, the crew gets busy preparing a delicious BBQ lunch for you on the beach. You can then settle into a relaxed picnic setup under the shade and savor grilled meats, fresh seafood, salads, and fruit. It feels wonderfully simple yet surprisingly luxurious to eat barefoot on a pristine beach, surrounded by gentle waves and a wide view of blue water in every direction.
In the afternoon, lounge on the sand or float in the gentle bay, taking in the last of Oman’s sun and sea. The boat will take you back to the marina at the end of the day. You should take this time to say your farewells to the captain and crew, as you won’t be seeing them again. By the late afternoon, you will have arrived back at your hotel.
If you wish, you can enjoy a special dinner on the final evening in Oman. You can choose a rooftop restaurant with a view of the city lights or a beachside venue serving the catch of the day. If you need assistance with recommendations or reservations, your guide or hotel concierge will be happy to help. Enjoy the last day, remembering the splendid adventures and experiences you had in the past week and a half.
Accommodation: Al Bustan Palace (or similar luxury hotel in Muscat)
Meal: Breakfast and Lunch
Enjoy a final breakfast at your hotel as you take in the last warm touch of Omani hospitality. Depending on your flight schedule, you may have a few spare hours in the morning to relax or purchase some souvenirs. You could visit a nearby boutique for frankincense and myrrh, or simply take a peaceful walk along the beach to bid goodbye to the Arabian Sea.
At the appointed time, your driver will pick you up from your hotel and transfer you to Muscat International Airport. As you make your way through the city for the final time, you can look back on how varied your past ten days have been.
You moved from diving into clear wadi pools to climbing mountain cliffs, and from sleeping under desert stars to exploring centuries-old forts. This drive provides a quiet moment to take in all these moments. Once you reach the airport, you will have plenty of time to check in for your onward flight. Our team will assist with your luggage and bid you farewell with warm wishes for a safe and comfortable journey.
Depart Oman with a camera full of beautiful moments and a heart full of memories that feel richer each time you think back on them. As your Oman Grand Explorer adventure comes to a close, you carry more than just photos. You take with you the warmth of Omani hospitality, the energy of its mountains and deserts, and the quiet charm of its old towns. These experiences stay with you long after the journey ends, becoming stories you will return to again and again.
Meal: Breakfast
Customize this trip with help from our local travel specialist that matches your interests.
We also operate Private Trips.
For the Oman Grand Explorer, it is best to pack light but smart so you stay comfortable in the city, canyons, desert, and mountains. Bring quick-dry, modest clothing that covers shoulders and knees, along with modest swimwear and a small towel or sarong. For your feet, use sturdy hiking shoes for trails, water shoes or old sneakers for canyoning, and sandals or flip-flops for evenings and the beach. Since desert and mountain nights can be cool, add a fleece or light jacket, long pants, and, in winter, a beanie and thermals.
To protect yourself from the sun, carry a hat, sunscreen, SPF lip balm, sunglasses, a light scarf or neck gaiter, and a UV shirt is useful for snorkeling. A small daypack and a reusable water bottle are handy, and you should also pack toiletries, personal medications, a small first-aid kit, insect repellent, and aloe vera. Finally, bring UK-style plug adapters, chargers, a power bank, a flashlight or headlamp, a waterproof phone case or dry bag, plus tissues, hand sanitizer, and earplugs. Because laundry is available in Muscat, you can keep your packing simple while still staying clean, covered, and comfortable throughout the journey.
This tour is ideal for travelers with moderate fitness who enjoy being active outdoors; you just need to be mobile and ready for adventure, not an athlete. The main hike is the Balcony Walk on Jebel Shams, about 4–5 km over roughly 3 hours on mostly flat terrain, while canyoning in Wadi Tiwi or Wadi Hawar feels like hiking through water, with wading, easy scrambling, and short floating sections in life jackets, and extra help available for non-swimmers.
The most demanding part is the via ferrata on Jebel Shams, where you climb metal rungs 180 meters up while secured to a safety cable; good balance and leg strength help, and you can simply skip it if you dislike heights. Heat and altitude in the desert and mountains are managed with early starts, shade, and plenty of water, and although 2,000 meters can feel a bit tiring, it is not extreme. Active kids from 10 years and up, and adults of any age with stable health, usually find the challenge manageable and very rewarding with the support of expert guides.
Throughout the Oman Grand Explorer, you stay in a mix of high-end hotels and comfortable wilderness camps, all chosen for their service, cleanliness, and sense of place. In Muscat (nights 1–3, 8–9), you sleep in five-star resorts with elegant rooms, pools, spas, Wi-Fi, and gourmet dining, giving you a calm base after each day’s adventures.
At Wadi Dayqah (night 4), you camp privately by the lake in walk-in canvas tents with proper beds, linens, toilets, and a simple shower, while our crew sets up camp and cooks dinner under the stars. In Wahiba Sands (night 5), you stay in a premium desert camp or our exclusive mobile camp, with comfortable bedding, Bedouin-style touches, and vast skies bright with stars. In Nizwa (night 6), you overnight in either a charming heritage inn or the best available 4-star hotel, with air conditioning and modern comforts.
On Jebel Shams (night 7), you can camp in warm expedition tents near the canyon rim, with basic facilities and spectacular sunrise views, or choose a simple mountain lodge nearby with private bathrooms and hot showers. Bedding and towels are provided everywhere; single travelers usually share with a same-gender roommate unless they request a private room, and we do our best to honor any special needs so you can experience Oman’s wilderness without giving up a good night’s sleep.
On the Oman Grand Explorer, you travel in spacious, air-conditioned 4×4 SUVs, such as Toyota Land Cruisers, with up to four guests per vehicle, plus a professional, licensed driver, and plenty of room for luggage; larger groups travel in a coordinated convoy. Your 4×4 stays with you for the whole journey, including airport transfers and all city and intercity travel, and on longer drives, you stop every one and a half to two and a half hours for photos, restrooms, or a stretch, with seatbelts, bottled water, cool towels, and often snacks provided in the car.
On Day 3 and Day 9, you switch to modern speedboats or cruisers for sea activities, all equipped with shaded seating, life jackets, full safety gear, and captains who give a short safety briefing before departure, with boat size matched to the group. In the desert, an extra support vehicle may carry camp gear while drivers stay in radio contact, and in the mountains, you travel only in safe daytime hours, with the freedom to ask for extra stops whenever you like, so your transportation feels both secure and flexible.
We welcome families on the Oman Grand Explorer and can turn it into a fun, safe adventure for all ages, with a recommended minimum age of 10 due to activities such as canyoning and the via ferrata. Our guides are used to leading kids and adjust the pace with extra breaks, snacks, and shade, while children usually love dolphin watching, camel rides, desert camping, and gentler horse or pony rides with experienced handlers.
With your child’s height and weight shared in advance, we prepare properly fitted safety gear and can add extra guides for younger participants on more technical sections. For comfort, we arrange connected rooms in hotels, private family tents at camps, and kid-friendly meals and snacks. A parent or guardian must join all activities, and if you or your child prefers to skip something, we adapt the plan so the trip still feels relaxed, enjoyable, and full of shared memories.
To confirm your Oman Grand Explorer tour, you pay a deposit of USD 900 per person, which counts toward your total trip cost. The remaining balance is due 30 days before departure. If you book within 30 days of the start date, you simply pay the full amount upfront.
You can cancel within 7 days of booking for a full refund, minus bank fees. After this grace period, the USD 900 deposit is non-refundable, but any additional payments are refunded if you cancel at least 30 days before departure; cancellations within 30 days are fully non-refundable. To cancel, you must email us, and any eligible refund is processed within 14 days to your original payment method (bank charges may apply). If Peregrine Treks cancels the tour, you receive a full refund or credit, and we strongly recommend travel insurance for extra protection.
Entering Oman is easy if you prepare a few basics in advance. Your passport should be in good condition, have blank pages, and be valid for at least six months after arrival. Many visitors from the US, UK, EU, Canada, Australia, Japan, and similar countries receive a free 14-day visa, while others or anyone staying longer should apply online for a 30-day eVisa and print the approval to show at immigration, where you may also be asked for your itinerary, hotel bookings, and travel insurance with medical and COVID-19 cover. Vaccines are usually not required unless you arrive from a yellow fever area, though routine shots plus Hepatitis A, Hepatitis B, and Typhoid are recommended. When packing, avoid narcotics, weapons, pork, and pornography, and declare any prescription medicines; non-Muslim visitors may bring up to 2 liters of alcohol. You can carry up to OMR 5,000 in cash without declaring it, and once in Oman you can rely on ATMs and card payments in most places.
On the Oman Grand Explorer, we put your safety first and build everything else around it. Certified guides, trained in wilderness first aid and CPR, keep groups small, provide clear briefings, and use regularly checked helmets, harnesses, life vests, and other essential gear. You travel in 4x4s equipped with GPS, radios, and first aid kits. In remote areas, we also utilize satellite communication and continually monitor the weather, enabling us to adjust plans as needed. Snorkeling always includes life jackets; via ferrata climbers stay clipped to secure cables, and off-road drivers travel in pairs with full recovery gear. No alcohol is allowed before activities. Oman itself is a very safe and welcoming destination, and we provide cultural tips, hydration advice, 24/7 emergency support, and quick access to hospitals in cities like Muscat or Nizwa. Throughout the trip, we adhere to strict safety standards and encourage you to speak up at any time, ensuring you feel both protected and at ease.
The Oman Grand Explorer follows an easy, active rhythm that balances adventure with rest. Most days start around 7 AM with breakfast, then you head out by eight or 8:30 for canyoning, hiking, or city touring in the cooler morning hours, with regular breaks for water, photos, and shade. Around midday, you stop for lunch at a scenic spot, on the boat, in a local café, or at camp, then continue toward the next destination with time to relax in the vehicle and enjoy the views. Afternoons often bring lighter activities or free time before dinner, and by 9 or 10 PM, most guests are either unwinding by the campfire under the stars or heading to bed to recharge for the next day.
Oman is a warm and welcoming country, yet traditional, so small gestures of respect are appreciated. Dress modestly; men should avoid going shirtless or wearing very short shorts, and women should avoid revealing clothes. For mosque visits, women need to cover their hair, arms, and legs with a scarf and long layers. Greet people with “As-salaam alaikum,” use your right hand for handshakes and payments, and remove your shoes before entering homes, mosques, or carpeted spaces. Keep public affection very discreet, always ask before photographing people (especially women), and follow any no-photo signs. During Ramadan, avoid eating or drinking in public during daylight, and remember that alcohol is only served in licensed venues and public drunkenness is not accepted. When offered Omani coffee or dates, it is polite to take a little, then gently shake your cup when you have had enough.
For staying connected in Oman, use the country code +968, pick up an easy, low-cost local SIM with data, and rely on hotel Wi-Fi in most places. Mobile signal is generally strong in cities, but it becomes patchy in more remote desert and mountain areas.
From arrival to departure, you’ll have our round-the-clock support, allowing you to relax and enjoy your trip with confidence. We provide you with an emergency phone number and a WhatsApp number that connects you to our English-speaking team for flight delays, lost items, or any other urgent issues. It is a good idea to share this number with someone at home. On tour, your guide is your primary point of contact, available 24/7 to assist with everything from minor illnesses to forgotten medications. They are trained in first aid and local logistics and will arrange and accompany you to medical care if needed. If your vehicle experiences any issues, we provide immediate backup transportation and, whenever necessary, can arrange a private return to Muscat or help in adjusting your travel plans. In the rare event of a serious situation, we also coordinate with local authorities or your embassy to provide support.
Yes, Oman is undoubtedly one of the safest destinations in the Middle East. In Oman, the crime rate is very low, and the people here are very hospitable and respectful. They are polite but not intrusive. Solo female travelers often report feeling at ease. With our guided tour, you will feel even more secure. However, as with any trip, it is still advisable to remain aware of your surroundings and dress modestly to respect local customs.
You don’t need to bring any technical equipment as we will provide you with all the necessary gear, including camping gear, snorkeling sets, and safety equipment for canyoning or climbing. You just need to bring your clothing, toiletries, and any personal items you may require.
We offer both private and group tours. There is a limit of 12 guests (typically 6-8) for the group size to ensure a personalized experience. As for the private tours, they are exclusive to your party.
Yes, you can do the via ferrata and canyoning, even if you haven’t done them before, as we have designed the activities on our itinerary to be accessible to beginners. Our team will provide you with a comprehensive set of safety gear, thorough safety briefings, and any additional support you may require. Many guests with no prior experience have tried them and enjoyed them as well. Participation is not mandatory, so you can skip them if you don’t feel like doing it. We will provide you with alternative activities so that your trip remains enjoyable.
You can easily charge your devices in Oman. Pack a few essentials before you go: a plug adapter, a power bank, and, if desired, a USB car charger. Oman uses the same Type-G plug as the United Kingdom, and the standard voltage is 240 volts. You will have full access to electricity in your hotel rooms. When you stay at the camp, charging is available for certain hours each day using either a generator or solar power.
Cellphone coverage is strong in Omani cities and on the highways. However, service can become weak or disappear in remote areas. Camps often do not offer Wi-Fi. In such cases, obtaining a local SIM card is a helpful idea. You should also know your guides carry satellite phones for emergencies. We always ensure that you have a reliable way to contact us if you need assistance.
Tips are not mandatory but are appreciated. You can tip $8 to $15 for the guide, $5 to $10 for drivers, and $5 to $10 for the camp staff, which will be shared among them. Tipping can be paid in OMR or other foreign currencies. It’s also a good idea to keep small bills on hand, as they are more convenient.
You will most definitely have the opportunity to meet the locals throughout the trip, be it at the market/souqs, villages, camps, or at cultural sites. Our tour incorporates real interactions and unexpected moments that allow you to experience the genuine Omani life and their prized hospitality.
Pack soft-sided bags, such as duffels or backpacks, as they are best suited for vehicles and desert camps. Also, it is best to bring one main bag for your belongings and a smaller daypack for daily essentials. You also have the option to leave any extra luggage behind in Muscat, where we can store it securely for you before or after the tour.
The camps offer clean, private toilet tents and basic shower facilities. During long drives, we will make regular stops at gas stations or rest houses. In the most remote areas, we follow strict Leave No Trace principles. We always prioritize your comfort and cleanliness in every location.
Yes, you can add extra time to your trip. You can extend your stay in places like Salalah, Musandam, or Ras al Jinz. You can also visit nearby countries, such as the United Arab Emirates. We will help you plan and arrange any of these extensions, whether you want more culture, nature, or simply time to relax on a beach.

Yes, we require all guests to have emergency medical coverage. Good travel insurance will protect you if you fall ill, encounter travel delays, or need to cancel your trip. It is a small investment, but it gives you very important peace of mind.
From October through April, you can expect warm and sunny days, followed by cooler nights. This makes it the perfect season for travel. However, nights in the desert and mountains can get quite cold, so please pack layers. Although rain is rare, it remains a possibility. If the weather ever affects our safety, we will adjust our plans accordingly.
Bring some Omani Rials with you for small purchases and for tips. You can use credit cards in most hotels, restaurants, and shops. You will also find ATMs are widely available if you need more cash. It is helpful to keep small bills on hand and remember to tell your bank about your travel plans before you leave. This simple step helps prevent your card from getting blocked.
