Georgia is one of the most underrated travel destinations on earth. Medieval watchtower villages sit above glaciers in the Greater Caucasus. A winemaking tradition stretching back 8,000 years runs through the vineyards of Kakheti. Route: Tbilisi (3N) → Kazbegi (2N) → Kakheti (2N) → Tbilisi (departure)
The 8-day Georgia Travel Itinerary covers the country’s three most essential experiences. These are the ancient capital, the High Caucasus mountains, and the wine country of Kakheti. Travelers who want a solid, unhurried introduction to Georgia fit this format well.
Tbilisi days cover the Old Town (Abanotubani sulfur bath district, Narikala Fortress, Metekhi Church), the National Museum, and the Mtatsminda ridge above the city. Day three adds Mtskheta — the original Georgian capital, 20 km north of Tbilisi, home to the UNESCO-inscribed Jvari Monastery and the Svetitskhoveli Cathedral.
Kazbegi sits 157 km north of Tbilisi via the Georgian Military Highway. The drive passes the Zhinvali Reservoir and the medieval town of Ananuri before climbing into the Greater Caucasus. Gergeti Trinity Church sits at 2,170 meters above the Terek River gorge. Reach it by 4×4 or on foot in roughly 3 hours round trip from the village. Mount Kazbek rises to 5,047 meters to the north.
Kakheti covers Telavi, Sighnaghi, and at least two private winery visits. September and October bring the Rtveli grape harvest.
Accommodation examples: Stamba Hotel or Fabrika Suites (Tbilisi), Rooms Hotel Kazbegi (or equivalent boutique), Twins Wine Cellar (Napareuli, Kakheti).
Route: Tbilisi (3N) → Kazbegi (1N) → Kutaisi (2N) → Batumi (2N) → Tbilisi (1N, departure)
The 10-day Georgia Vacation Package is a full country circuit. It runs north from Tbilisi to Kazbegi before crossing the Surami Range into western Georgia. Kutaisi anchors the western leg, and Batumi ends the route at the Black Sea.
Kutaisi adds UNESCO-inscribed Gelati Monastery (12th century, intact Byzantine mosaics) and the Prometheus Cave system. The caves span 1.4 km of illuminated karst chambers, with an optional boat exit via the river section. The Okatse Canyon, with a 780-meter hanging walkway above the gorge, is 40 km from Kutaisi.
Batumi is on the Black Sea coast. The seaside boulevard, the old quarter near Piazza Square, and a subtropical microclimate that produces tea and citrus all reward a two-night stay. July and August are peak beach season. May, June, and September run quieter with better conditions for city walks.
Accommodation examples: Stamba Hotel Tbilisi, Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, Colchi Palace Kutaisi, Sheraton Batumi (or equivalent).
Route: Tbilisi (1N) → Kazbegi (2N) → Tbilisi (1N) → Zugdidi (1N) → Mestia (2N) → Ushguli (1N) → Tbilisi
The 9-day Georgia Trekking Tour focuses on the two premier mountain districts: Kazbegi in the Greater Caucasus and Svaneti in the western highlands. Ushguli, the final destination, sits at approximately 2,100 meters and is one of the highest continuously inhabited settlements in Europe.
Kazbegi trekking options include the Gergeti Trinity Church approach (3 hours round trip) and the Chkheri Valley circuit. Longer routes reach the Gergeti Glacier at 3,500 meters.
Access to Svaneti is via charter flight from Tbilisi to Mestia (20–30 minutes, weather-dependent) or by road via Zugdidi (roughly 5 hours). The Mestia-to-Ushguli trek covers 45 km over two to three days through alpine meadows and medieval tower villages. UNESCO has listed the Upper Svaneti region as a World Heritage Site.
Ushguli has the Lamaria Church (12th century) and a view of Shkhara Peak (5,201 meters, Georgia’s highest point) from the village’s edge.
The trek requires good physical fitness. Daily elevation gain on the Mestia-Ushguli section averages 400-600 meters. No technical climbing is involved. Pack waterproof layers. The weather above 2,000 meters changes within the hour.
Season: June through September, only for the full Mestia-Ushguli trek. Snow closes sections from October.
Accommodation: Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, Hotel Lushnu Qor (Mestia), Guesthouse Lile or equivalent (Ushguli).
Route: Tbilisi (2N) → Sighnaghi (2N) → Telavi (2N) → Tbilisi (departure)
The 7-day Georgia Wine Tours package concentrates on Kakheti, the country’s principal wine-producing region. Georgia’s qvevri winemaking method — fermenting whole-grape must in buried clay vessels — earned UNESCO Intangible Cultural Heritage status in 2013. The technique produces orange-amber wines that differ structurally from anything made in France, Italy, or Spain.
Sighnaghi is a walled hilltop town above the Alazani valley. Key varieties: Rkatsiteli (Georgia’s most planted white, used for amber wines), Mtsvane (aromatic white), and Saperavi (intensely colored, full-bodied red).
The itinerary includes at least four winery visits. Large producers like Château Mukhrani and Kindzmarauli Corporation mix with small family qvevri operations. In those small cellars, six to twelve clay vessels sit buried in the earth floor.
Alazani Valley tours can also include a visit to the David Gareja Monastery. The complex sits 60 km southeast of Sighnaghi, on the edge of the semi-desert Gareja plateau near the Azerbaijan border.
The Rtveli grape harvest runs from late August through October in Kakheti. Visiting during harvest means access to active pressing and a genuinely festive atmosphere in the villages.
Accommodation examples: Stamba Hotel Tbilisi, Kvareli Lake Resort, or equivalent boutique (Kakheti).
Route: Tbilisi (3N) → Kazbegi (2N) → Kutaisi (2N) → Batumi (2N) → Vardzia/Borjomi (2N) → Kakheti (2N) → Tbilisi (departure)
The 14-day Georgia Holiday Package is the complete country circuit. It covers every major region: the capital, the High Caucasus, western Georgia, the Black Sea coast, the southern cave cities, and the Kakheti wine country.
Vardzia is a 12th-century cave monastery city carved into the volcanic cliff face of Erusheti Mountain, 65 km west of Akhaltsikhe. At its peak, the complex held over 3,000 monks in 579 carved chambers across 19 levels. A 25-meter fresco of Queen Tamar survives in the main church.
Borjomi is a 19th-century spa town known for its naturally carbonated mineral water. The mineral springs are free to drink from in Borjomi Central Park.
The 14-day structure allows one rest day in each major cluster. No day runs more than 4 hours of driving.
Accommodation examples: Stamba Hotel Tbilisi, Rooms Hotel Kazbegi, Colchi Palace Kutaisi, Sheraton Batumi, Rixos Borjomi (or equivalent), Kvareli Lake Resort (Kakheti).
Where Is Georgia, and How Do You Get There?
Georgia is a country in the South Caucasus. It borders Russia to the north, Turkey and Armenia to the south, Azerbaijan to the east, and the Black Sea to the west. The capital is Tbilisi, and the international airport code is TBS.
Direct or one-stop flights connect Tbilisi to major European hubs, as well as to Istanbul, Dubai, and Doha. Flying time from London is approximately 5 hours. From Dubai, it is approximately 3 hours.
Do You Need a Visa for Georgia?
Citizens of the EU, the US, the UK, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, and Israel enter Georgia visa-free for up to 1 year. Most other nationalities enter visa-free for up to 90 days. Check your specific nationality’s current status before booking.
As of January 2026, all tourists entering Georgia must hold valid travel insurance. The minimum required coverage is 30,000 GEL (approximately 11,000 USD). Airlines and land borders verify insurance documents on arrival.
When Is the Best Time for Georgia Tour Packages?
April to June and September to October are the two peak seasons. Spring brings mild temperatures (15°C to 22°C in Tbilisi), green mountain meadows, and fewer tourist groups. Autumn brings the Kakheti wine harvest, stable dry weather, and clear days for mountain views.
July and August are hot in Tbilisi (regularly above 30°C) but ideal for mountain trekking in Kazbegi and Svaneti. The Svaneti trekking season runs from June through September.
Winter (December to February) is ideal for wine touring and exploring Tbilisi. Gudauri (120 km north of Tbilisi, base 2,000 m) and Bakuriani (150 km from Tbilisi, 1,700 m) both offer ski seasons in winter.

What Currency Does Georgia Use?
Georgia uses the Georgian Lari (GEL). Cards are widely accepted in Tbilisi, larger hotels, and most restaurants. Rural guesthouses, village markets, and small wineries prefer cash. Withdraw GEL from bank ATMs in Tbilisi on arrival. Avoid airport currency exchange booths — city bank rates are significantly better.
Is Georgia Safe for Travelers?
Yes. Georgia is one of the safer countries in the Caucasus. Violent crime toward tourists is rare. Tbilisi’s Old Town and Rustaveli Avenue are well-lit and comfortable to walk at night. The Georgian government does not administer the breakaway regions of South Ossetia and Abkhazia. Peregrine does not operate tours into either region.
Peregrine Treks and Tours has operated private custom travel since 2002. We are registered with TAAN, NMA, and NTB and have offices in Kathmandu and Muscat. Every Georgia package is direct-booked with our licensed in-country guide network. No group coaches. No fixed departure dates.
What is the most popular Georgia tour package for first-time visitors?
The 8-day Georgia Travel Itinerary is the strongest starting point. It covers Tbilisi, Mtskheta, the Kazbegi mountains, and the Kakheti wine region in a well-paced circuit. Eight days is enough to see the country’s three most distinct environments — city, mountains, and wine country — with time to slow down in each.
Can Georgia tour packages be customized?
Yes. Every Peregrine Georgia package is private and built around your dates. We can extend any itinerary, add Batumi or western Georgia, or focus purely on wine country. Combining Georgia with Armenia and Azerbaijan makes a full South Caucasus circuit. Contact us with your dates and interests, and we will build a custom proposal.
Is the Mestia-Ushguli trek included in the trekking package?
Yes. The 9-day Georgia Trekking Tour includes the Mestia-to-Ushguli route through Upper Svaneti, a two- to three-day walk covering approximately 45 km. A licensed local trekking guide leads the Svaneti section. The trek runs only from June through September. Outside this window, snow closes the high sections of the route.
Do Georgia tour packages include wine tastings?
The 7-day Georgia Wine Tours package includes at least 4 winery visits with guided tastings throughout Kakheti. Other packages include one or two winery stops as day-trip additions. We can add structured wine experiences — including private qvevri cellar visits and participation in the harvest during September and October — to any itinerary on request.
How does Georgia compare to Armenia or Azerbaijan as a travel destination?
Georgia has the most varied terrain of the three South Caucasus countries — the High Caucasus mountains, subtropical coast, wine country, and an exceptional capital city. Armenia has the oldest Christian heritage sites and can be covered in five to seven days. Azerbaijan offers Baku as a dramatic modern base with striking mountain landscapes in the north. Many travelers combine all three on a 14- to 21-day South Caucasus circuit. Peregrine operates packages across all three countries.
What is the mandatory travel insurance requirement for Georgia?
As of January 2026, all tourists entering Georgia must hold valid travel insurance. The minimum required coverage is 30,000 GEL (approximately 11,000 USD). Georgian border authorities and airlines verify insurance documents on entry. Standard international travel insurance policies from most reputable providers meet or exceed this threshold. Confirm your policy coverage before departure.
