    Essential Information

    Trek difficulty

The Gokyo lake trek perfectly blends moderate difficulty and majestic beauty. Even though the itinerary may suggest shorter days, you will be challenged with the sudden altitude gain and descent on the same or following days. The hike will take you through some of the most spectacular sights ever.

It would help if you planned to hike for at least 5 to 7 hours daily and be prepared for a challenging climb from Day 9 as you traverse through Gokyo Ri, Thangna, and then Chola pass and Dzongla to Kala Patthar and Gorak Shep. You will ascend to heights of more than 5000m and then descend to 4800m.

So, if you’re ready to embark on this daring trek, you must ensure you’re in top physical and mental condition. Having experience hiking up to 5,000 meters in altitude can be a real advantage, and you should brush up on your crampon-wearing skills if you haven’t done so already.

    Best time for the trek

Springtime (March to May), when the flowers bloom, and the birds sing, is the perfect time to trek around the beautiful Gokyo Lake. Temperatures range from a mild 15°C in the high elevations to an astonishing -10°C, making it an enjoyable destination no matter the season. The air is crisp, and the Himalayas are graced with vibrant rhododendrons. The Gokyo Lakes can also be frozen, creating a stunning view of snow-dusted mountains and glistening ice.

Autumn is also an ideal time to visit Gokyo from September through early December. The temperatures range from 15 to 18°C during the day and 0 to 5°C at night, creating a beautiful contrast between the golden/amber vegetation and crystal blue skies.

Winter (late December to February) and monsoon (June to August) seasons can be just as enjoyable. During winter, the snow can be heavy at greater heights such as Kalapatthar, Gorakshep, and Cho La Pass. However, this only serves to add to the beauty of the region. The sunsets have a unique hue, and the atmosphere is eerily tranquil.

During monsoons, the air turns crisp, and the sound of rain pattering against the earth creates a serene atmosphere. Everywhere you look, the landscape is alive with lush greenery and the sweet smell of rain.

At Peregrine Treks, we make it easy for you to plan your dream vacation no matter the season. We have the perfect package if you’re looking for a relaxing getaway or a thrilling outdoor adventure.

    Trek Safety Tips

It’s essential to get ready and ensure that your body is in optimal physical shape to ensure your Gokyo lake trek is successful. A few weeks before the trek, performing light aerobic activities, stretching, and toning exercises will aid you in getting your body ready for the varying weather and potential high altitudes.

Ensure you have all the required items like warm clothing, reliable hiking boots, shocks, gloves, sunglasses, and other essential equipment.

Take acclimatization or rest days seriously, as the Gokyo lake trek is one of the most strenuous treks in terms of altitude. The route from Namche Bazaar to Gokyo is not just a flat walk, although it is a short distance. You’ll be going from 3,440m to above 5000 m, so it’s wise to break up the journey and spread it over a few days to assist your body in adjusting to the altitude and avoid any nasty surprises.

Drink at least three liters of water throughout your trek to hydrate your body and fuel your muscles properly. In addition, try to avoid eating heavy and fatty foods that may slow you down and make your trek more difficult. Instead, opt for lighter snacks and meals that give your body the energy and nutrients needed to keep going.

    One Typical Day

Each morning of this epic trek will begin with a delicious breakfast, giving you the sustenance for the energy you need to tackle the day’s journey. You’ll hike for at least 6 to 7 hours, taking in the breathtaking scenery and views of picturesque mountains and landscapes and capturing memories with photographs and videos. At noon, you’ll break for lunch at one of the quaint tea houses, allowing you to appreciate the beauty of your surroundings.

After lunch, the journey will continue until late in the evening, where you’ll end the day at a tea house or local lodge and drift off to a peaceful sleep. This trek will be the adventure of a lifetime, the experience that will stay with you for years.
